The hunt for Garter Banners

Earlier in the year St George’s teamed up with NADFAS to try and locate some missing banners of deceased Knights of the Garter.

The colourful heraldic banners of the current Knights of the Garter hang in St George’s Chapel but when a Knight dies the banner is returned to the family.  Some are kept privately, many are displayed in parish churches, cathedrals, university colleges or stately homes around the country or as far afield as the Falkland Islands and New Zealand.   A list of known locations was compiled earlier this year but there were gaps in it; it is to fill in this missing information that help is being sought. 

A prize of a special visit to St George’s Chapel will be given to the NADFAS member who locates the earliest banner or the greatest number of additions or confirmations.  Although many responses have already been sent to the Chapter Office why not spend a little time this summer seeing if you can fill in some of the gaps before the closing date of 30 September 2009.  The majority of missing information relates to appointments made by George V and his predecessors.
