the College of St George the Dean and Canons support St. George's House
as part of their mission to the wider world. The House was established
in 1966 in a handsome 17th century building within the walls of Windsor
Castle. The then Dean of Windsor, The Right Reverend Robin Woods, and
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh had the vision to use it to create a centre
for Consultations and Clergy Courses where in the words of HRH The Duke
of Edinburgh "men and women from widely differing backgrounds
and experience can attempt to diagnose the failings of our society under
the pressures of contemporary conditions and grope for cures."
Consultations, attendance at which is by invitation, are expected to
have the following features:
- They should bring together people in positions of leadership
- They should bring together those who otherwise might not meet.
- They should discuss issues of immediate social concern.
They should endeavour to make the world a better place.
A key requirement of the House is that participants at consultations,
which take place under Chatham House Rules, should be prepared to change
their minds.
The Clergy Courses were part of the founding vision for St. George's
House. They aim to give the clergy an opportunity to withdraw from their
normal duties to reflect on the role of the church - and of their own
ministry - in a changing world. They are both ecumenical and international.
