Discovering a Cathedral-like building inside a Castle is intriguing for many visitors to Windsor.

This section aims to answer some of the most frequently asked questions received by us from members of the public.

Why is there such a large Chapel here in the Castle?
The Chapel tries to meet the needs not only of the Castle's own community but also of royal and state occasions when the congregations are likely to be very large.

How many sovereigns are buried in Windsor?

Starting from Henry VI who died in 1461 right up until 1952 when George VI died, 10 kings are buried in St George's, and Queen Victoria and Edward VIII are buried nearby at Frogmore in the Home Park.

How old is the Chapel?
There would have been a Chapel in the Castle right from 1070 when it was built.

The first Chapel to be built of stone dates from 1240 - you can still see its north wall from the Dean's cloister.

The present St George's was started in the reign of Edward IV in 1475 and took some 53 years to complete.

What is the Order of the Garter?

A group of people (thought originally to be 2 jousting teams) personally chosen by the sovereign in recognition of life-long service to the country.

The group usually contains at least one sailor, soldier and airman reflecting the military foundation of the Order.

Founded by Edward III in 1348 at the beginning of the Hundred Years War, it is the oldest surviving order of chivalry in the world.

What recent royal events have taken place at St George's?

Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones were married here in June 1999.

Princess Margaret's funeral took place here in February 2002

The body of the Queen Mother was buried in St George's Chapel in April 2002.

Is this place still used?
There are three services every day (07.30, 08.00 and 17.15), and four on Sundays (08.30, 10.45, 11.45 and 17.15). Visitors are very welcome to attend.

How do we set about visiting St George's Chapel?
St George's Chapel is included in the Visit to Windsor Castle

People wishing to attend a service in the Chapel are asked to present themselves at the Henry VIII gate 15 minutes before the service and they will then be directed up to the Chapel. (eg 17.00 if coming to 17.15 Evensong)
