PLEASE SUPPORT OUR IMPORTANT WORK TO HELP MAINTAIN THE FABRIC AND THE BEAUTY OF THE CHAPEL AND THE WORK OF THE COLLEGE OF ST GEORGE, THEREBY ENSURING ITS USE AND ENJOYMENT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

The Society of the Friends of St George's &
Descendants of the Knights of the Garter

Friends LogoSince 1931 The Friends have helped the Dean and Canons preserve the fabric of St George's Chapel and provide the necessary furnishings and equipment to maintain this historic church as the shrine of the Order of the Garter, founded by King Edward III in 1348, and the burial place of many of its Sovereigns since. Prayers are offered each day for the Sovereign and Companions of the Order both past and present. At the same time, the Chapel offers a continuous pattern of Anglican worship, similar to our great cathedrals, with an outstanding musical tradition of choristers (treble voices) from St George's School and lay clerks (tenors and basses). The Chapel has a fine Harrison & Harrison 4-manual organ which is still maintained by the same famous Durham organ company to this day.

St GeorgeIn 1948, to celebrate the six-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Order, King George VI commanded the Knights to assemble at Windsor Castle for their Chapter meeting, Procession through the Castle and Service in St George's Chapel. Since then Garter Day, held in mid-June has been, as in centuries past, a vital expression of the life of the Order. The Friends are invited early each year to apply for tickets in the Chapel itself, in the Friends Stand or on the Lawn.
