St George's Chapel is the resting place of many Kings and Queens, particularly since the creation of the Royal Vault, which was built by George III. At the appropriate moment in the funeral service, the coffin descends into the vault below. There exist photographs of King Edward VIII scattering earth on the coffin of King George V in January 1936, and the present Queen doing likewise as King George VI's coffin descended in February 1952. Most Kings and Queens since George III have been buried here. Members of the Royal Family have also been interred in the Royal Vault, but more recently, it has been normal to bury them in the Royal Family's Private Burial Ground at Frogmore.
