There has been a significant amount of debate both in parliament and in the media on the subject of assisted dying. Legislation is in place, yet the interpretation of that legislation continues to exercise society generally. A number of individuals and organisations have taken particularly entrenched positions for a range of understandable reasons and there is a growing literature on the subject, often drawing on comparisons with current international practice.
One aim of the Consultation was to stand back from the debate, and while respecting individual perspectives and opinions, attempt to understand where we might need to pursue further areas of conversation and research. This could only be achieved by gathering together the widest possible range of opinions and perspectives, not least from professional bodies and sectors.
Under the skilful chairmanship of Baroness Warnock, representatives from a range of organisations and disciplines engaged in high quality disagreement as participants debated a range of issue pertinent to the topic. A fuller report is in gestation.
