The Elson Ethics Lecture 2009


Elson Ethics LecturesThe Inaugural Elson Ethics Lecture was given by Professor Lord Richard Harries on 20 November 2009 in St George's Chapel. He spoke on 'The Ethics of Assisted Dying'.

Richard Harries was Bishop of Oxford from 1987-2006. On his retirement he was made a Life Peer and he continues to be active in the House of Lords as a Crossbencher.

He is Gresham Professor of Divinity and an Honorary Professor of Theology at King’s College, London.  He has contributed to the Today programme since 1972, though does so now less regularly. He recently made three Radio 4 programmes on The Atheist and the Bishop exploring values from a religious and non religious perspective with leading atheists.

He is the author of 25 books, most recently The Re-enchantment of Morality, SPCK; with three books due next year, Issues of Life and Death, SPCK, Faith in Politics? Rediscovering the Christian roots of our Political Values, DLT and (with Stephen Platten) Reinhold Niebuhr and Contemporary Politics, OUP. He has been a member of the Human Fertilisation and Embryo Authority since 2003 and chairs its Ethics and Law Committtee.
