In
1519 James Denton, a canon of Windsor, created a 'commons' or communal
lodging for the ever growing numbers of choristers and chantry priests
associated with the college. Denton's Commons, so called, were established
within the remains of a twelfth-century royal chamber block, which was
adapted to the purpose. This building was demolished in 1859 but some
architectural fragments from it were rescued including a fireplace which
is now located in the Vicars' Hall. It stood in the area of what is now
an open court between the Horseshoe and Dean's Cloisters
